  BAKU HOSTS INT’L CONFERENCE ON “ROLE OF MEDIA IN DEVELOPMENT OF TOLERANCE AND MUTUAL UNDERSTANDING”
The international conference on “Role of Media in Development of Tolerance and Mutual Understanding” has started on Friday at the Baku’s Gulistan Palace.
The Conference is conducted according to the Baku Declaration accepted at the 33rd session of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) member countries, taken place in June 2006.
Considering the important events occurring in intercultural and inter-religious development in 21 century, the Organization of Islamic Conference and Azerbaijan presiding in Ministerial Council of Foreign Affairs at OIC in 2006-2007, make their contribution to solution of the important questions for restoration of stability in many regions of the world.
The Conference is organized in Azerbaijan, on unique space where various people in centuries lived in conditions of peaceful co-existence and where have merged the basic religions. The Conference focuses on traditional and new problems of mass media, which plays important role in formation, and development of relations between the nations and faiths.
By organizing the conference, Azerbaijan shows attention to solution of universal problems. As President Ilham Aliyev has emphasized, Azerbaijan plays more and more active role in the international arena, and it proves, that the country aspires to make contribution to solution of problems not only in region, but also in the world. As chairman of Ministerial Council of Foreign Affairs of OIC, Azerbaijan has done significant work in 2006-2007, and made a number of proposals. One of such important actions became the current conference.
Representatives of 11 international organizations, from 49 states (UN, European Union, Council of Europe, the African Union, UNESCO, ISESCO, etc.), as well as officials of governments, authoritative media of world, NGOs, renowned specialists in the field of inter-religious and inter-cultural relations, scholars attended the Conference.
Ali Hasanov, head of the socio-political department of President’s Office, read out the congratulatory letter of Azerbaijan President to the participants of event.
Speaking at the event, Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan Elmar Mammadyarov stressed a significance of holding this conference in Baku. He said the conference will highlight a role of media in development of tolerance and mutual understanding. According to him, the history of Azerbaijan gives grounds to say that our country is an example of tolerance. The government of Azerbaijan pursues an effective policy to protect national minorities.
He pointed out that while Armenian commits the policy of aggression and genocide against Azerbaijanis, Armenians now live in Azerbaijan. They have equal rights and face no discrimination. It must be a vivid example of the policy of our government based on the values common to all mankind.
Foreign Minister stressed an importance of the joint fight against terror and great role of press in this issue.
Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, secretary general of the Organization of the Islamic Conference expressed his deep gratitude to President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev for organizing the event
He stressed a role of media in development of tolerance and mutual understanding and highlighted an importance of facilitating an exchange of information in the light of the rapid spread of information and communication technologies.
In his remarks, former President of Romania Ion Iliesku noted that his country was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Azerbaijan and stressed national leader Heydar Aliyev’s contribution to the dialogue among civilizations.
I. Iliesku expressed his regret over existence of some conflicts in the Caucasus, which is the junction of various religions.
ISESCO director general Abdulaziz Othman Altwaijri stressed a significance of making tolerance a major criterion in the world. Describing tolerance as a weapon against extremism he said all people have the right for coexistence and mutual understanding.
He underlined that Baku conference is one of the serious steps to popularize tolerance.
In his video address to the conference participants, Terry Davis, Secretary General of the Council of Europe pointed out that perception of other cultures is the only way of achieving tolerance and mutual understanding. Media, according to him, has a special part in realizing them.
Also speaking at the conference was UN Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of the right to freedom of opinion and expression, Ambeyi Ligabo, representative of Switzerland Reingard Meyer and others.
