Summit of the GUUAM heads of state passed at the “Respublika” Palace in Chisinau, April 22.

Opening the Summit, president of Moldova Vladimir Voronin greeted the heads of member states, as well as the presidents of Romania and Lithuania, representatives of international organizations and stated that the Summit is of great importance for region. Participation of the presidents of Romania and Lithuania, other authoritative delegates shows interest to GUUAM. Expansion of cooperation between GUUAM and the European Union will serve ensuring territorial integrity of the GUUAM member states and strengthen peace and security in region, he underlined.

President of Moldova Vladimir Voronin assessed the official visit of the Azerbaijan president Ilham Aliyev to Moldova as a sign of cooperation of the member countries.

The Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili said GUUAM is a union of democratic states, noting that on offer of the Ukrainian president, the Prednestrovie and other existent conflicts in GUUAM countries would be discussed.

President of Ukraine, Victor Yushchenko suggested on strengthening of cooperation in the frame of GUUAM, stressed necessity of setting up the Organization’s Parliamentary Assembly, permanent office, and Secretariat.

On the second day of his visit, president of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with the president of Romania Traian Basescu.

The two presidents stressed necessity of strengthening of activity of the BSEC and GUUAM, which would ensure peace and stability in region.

The parties also focused the questions of integration to the Euro-Atlantic structures.

During the meeting, President Ilham Aliyev recalled his visit to Ukraine noted that Azerbaijan, too, readies to receive President Victor Yushchenko. Preparation of relevant agreements is underway, President of Azerbaijan emphasized.

The party had comprehensive exchange of views on number international questions, underlining that the Summit would promote development of cooperation in the Black Sea and Caspian regions.

President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev met with the president of Georgia Mikhail Saakashvili who was taking part at the GUUAM Summit of the heads of state of member countries in Kishinev, April 22.

Heads of State expressed consent with conclusions of the Summit, highly appraised it and said that the arrangement was a success for regional cooperation.

In the meeting, the Presidents had wide exchange of views on questions of development of regional co-op, issues of regional and international safety.

President Ilham Aliyev and President Mikhail Saakashvili also focused the realization of the large-scale projects, including construction of the BTC MEP and Baku-Tbilisi-Erzurum gas main noting that successful cooperation between Azerbaijan and Georgia makes its contribution to strengthening of regional safety.
